Join Our Team: General Manager

FirstMate is looking for an experienced senior leader to join our team as General Manager.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to lead FirstMate – providing strategic direction and day-to-day management to ensure we can effectively deliver mental health and wellbeing services to New Zealand’s fishing and marine farming communities.

This is a part-time (up to 10 hours a week) contract position, reporting to the FirstMate Board of Directors (Chair).
Salary: $60,000 per annum.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide overall operational leadership and management of FirstMate

  • Manage the Lead Navigator and contractor relationships

  • Oversee financial management, budgeting, and reporting

  • Prepare Board papers and support governance and strategic decision-making

  • Lead stakeholder engagement with industry, government, and community partners

  • Develop and implement fundraising strategies

  • Lead operational planning and continuous improvement


Who We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Leadership experience: Proven track record in senior management with operational responsibility

  • Financial management: Strong budgeting, forecasting, and reporting skills

  • Governance experience: Ability to support a Board and contribute to strategic planning

  • Fundraising capability: Demonstrated experience in grant writing and revenue development

  • People skills: Excellent communication and ability to engage with diverse stakeholders

  • Seafood sector knowledge: Understanding of fishing and marine farming (desirable)

  • Mental health awareness: Understanding of wellbeing in high-stress environments (desirable)

You’ll be self-motivated, resilient, and passionate about mental health and wellbeing in our seafood sector.
