Join Our Team: General Manager

FirstMate is looking for an experienced senior leader to join our team as General Manager.
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to lead FirstMate – providing strategic direction and day-to-day management to ensure we can effectively deliver mental health and wellbeing services to New Zealand’s fishing and marine farming communities.
This is a part-time (up to 10 hours a week) contract position, reporting to the FirstMate Board of Directors (Chair).
Salary: $60,000 per annum.
What You’ll Do
Provide overall operational leadership and management of FirstMate
Manage the Lead Navigator and contractor relationships
Oversee financial management, budgeting, and reporting
Prepare Board papers and support governance and strategic decision-making
Lead stakeholder engagement with industry, government, and community partners
Develop and implement fundraising strategies
Lead operational planning and continuous improvement
Who We’re Looking For
The ideal candidate will bring:
Leadership experience: Proven track record in senior management with operational responsibility
Financial management: Strong budgeting, forecasting, and reporting skills
Governance experience: Ability to support a Board and contribute to strategic planning
Fundraising capability: Demonstrated experience in grant writing and revenue development
People skills: Excellent communication and ability to engage with diverse stakeholders
Seafood sector knowledge: Understanding of fishing and marine farming (desirable)
Mental health awareness: Understanding of wellbeing in high-stress environments (desirable)
You’ll be self-motivated, resilient, and passionate about mental health and wellbeing in our seafood sector.
