FirstMate is looking for an experienced leader to join our team as Lead Navigator.
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to lead and coordinate our Navigator network — the heart of FirstMate's support services. As Lead Navigator, you'll provide strategic direction and day-to-day support to ensure our team can effectively deliver mental health and wellbeing services to New Zealand's fishing and marine farming communities.
This is a part-time (0.5 FTE) contract position, reporting to the General Manager.
What You'll Do
Lead and support our Navigator network across New Zealand
Oversee the 0800 ADRIFT phone line and ensure quality response to our community
Coordinate training, professional development, and recruitment
Build and maintain systems that support effective navigator operations
Represent FirstMate in stakeholder engagement with industry partners
Monitor and report on service delivery and emerging sector needs
We're Looking For
The ideal candidate will bring:
Leadership experience: Minimum 5 years in people management and team coordination
Seafood sector knowledge: Understanding of fishing and marine farming operations, culture, and challenges
Community experience: Proven track record working with volunteers and community networks
Systems thinking: Strong organisational skills and experience developing processes
Mental health awareness: Understanding of wellbeing drivers and ability to maintain professional boundaries
People skills: Excellent communication and ability to connect authentically with diverse stakeholders
You'll be empathetic, resilient, and passionate about mental health and wellbeing in our seafood sector. You'll also be self-motivated, practical, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
